Hello,
I have been checking out this site for a few months now. I grew up in Morehead and have experienced a small portion of the trail. I am now 25 and don't live in KY anymore (sad to say), but when I make it home to visit my parents and friends, I see more and more construction happening around 32 and as I read accounts of the hikers that have taken the northern route to Cave Run it sounds like it is not the best. I am just throwing this out there so we can chat about it over the winter months, but would there be a huge uprising if the trail ended at the forest ranger center on 801 by Cave Run? That would be a great plac

Trail Log Books Author: Traildust

One way we might be able to track the number of hikers and others using The Trace would be to put up "log book" boxes at both ends of The Trace. I would be willing to build a box and put the post in the ground at the Northern Terminus. I am guess the forest service folks would have no problem but would want it to be painted the typical brown color.

Having not hiked the southern terminus could someone tell me if there is already a log book down there?

Route 1242 to Cave Run Lake Dam - trip report Author: rootman
Posted: Wed Nov 19, 2008 7:21 pm (GMT -5)

This report describes a northbound backpacking trip from November 7th to 9th, 2008, starting at the Route 1242 trailhead, which is the southern end of the Clifton Creek drainage, and ending at the north end of Cave Run Lake dam. We are three retirees (dentist, engineer/executive, and county agriculture agent) and an aspiring retiree (airline pilot), with ages ranging from 49 to 68 (average: 59). We prefer to hike only 8 to 10 miles per day, depending on the terrain.
Our plan was to drive to the Brownwood Bed and Breakfast (www.brownwoodbandb.com), which is less than 1/2 mile from the dam, and have one of the owners, Jeff Shir

strength training for outdoor enthusiasts Author: jamie hale

I was recently interviewed by Graham Averill of Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine . We discussed strength and conditioning for outdoor athletes for approx 60 minutes. Graham is writing an article for the magazine discussing the importance of supplementary strength and conditioning work. A couple of key points I made when speaking with Graham was:

1-Don't be afraid of getting too big when weight training. Getting big requires good genetics (for getting huge) eating excess cals, high P-ratios, and making a concentrated effort to promote hypertrophy (enlargement of muscle tissue)

2-Proper strength training increases bone and co

Red River Gorge to Cave Run Author: jamie hale

I plan on hiking from Red River Gorge to Cave Run Lake within the next couple of weeks. My understanding is the trail is approx 38 miles. Is that correct? I plan on hiking a large portion of the trail this spring. Maybe the entire trail. I plan on writing a series of articles on the trail. I write on nature, exercise, science, nutrition, logic and combat sports.

I recently discovered this forum. I have been impressed with the photos and the information provided on the forum. I look forward to learning more about the trail and commenting when I have something useful to add to the discussion.

Bikepacking Sheltowee Author: chuckc1971

I've been researching this site heavily since I found it just recently.

Someone posted a similar question on the Kentucky Mountain Bike Association Forum maybe a year or more ago.

According to the USDA Forest Service website, all but 53.9 miles of the Sheltowee in KY allow mountain biking. As I have read on here, several of these allowed miles are fairly steep ravine cuts, with steps and other terrain making biking difficult.

What I would like to do is to connect all the viable (via mountain bike anyway) and legal sections of the Sheltowee together in one trip. Where illegal or the terrain length/difficulty would make i
